Building a house

I have to admit, I am jealous of Kd. She has a house. She has a basement. Her kids each have their own rooms. Do you know what a process it is to build your own home? Not to mention, how expensive! Just to give you an idea of how expensive concrete is, let me tell you about Britt's shed. His goal was to build it for under $10,000. The first bid he got on the concrete was $11,000. I think he found someone to do it for $8,000, and that's just a shed!
Now, we have got to pick windows, bricks, bathroom tubs, showers and toilets. That's just the beginning. We will have to pick out tile, carpet, fixtures, cabinets, paint, countertops, and a thousand other things in the next few months.
Things seem to be moving pretty slowly right now, but I know once those main decisions start coming up, it's going to get crazy. Britt has already ordered the windows and garage doors. We are hoping to pick them up when he goes up the first of next month fro surgery on his arm.
I don't know if you know, but Britt broke his arm this spring. The doctor in Cortez told him he probably didn't need surgery.
Well, a few weeks ago, he met with a doctor in Orem who said he definitely needs surgery, and he will be out of commission for a couple months after that.
He is trying frantically to get as much done as he can before his surgery.
When I said, we are building our own house, I need to clarify. We do have a contractor doing the work, and subcontractors. But Britt is trying to do a few little things that he can (like the shed).
I am excited about having our own house, and hopefully we really can get it right this time. Britt is very particular about everything. I like to say he has discriminating taste. While it is not always easy to live with him, I should take this as a compliment, since he picked me.
We celebrated our anniversary a couple weeks ago. We went to a mini-resort 30 minutes east of Moab, next to the Colorado River. It was really nice, even though it was just overnight. That makes 13 years for Britt and I.
We are going to miss Mom and Dad when they leave in a little over a week, but we hope they have a great time. We are thinking of you Chrisylnn, and praying that all goes well with your delivery.

the house plans look awesome. I can't wait for the home to be completed and your family can have room to stretch.

Nan, We are in the process of planning an addition. It is so overwhelming! Maybe we can compare notes. Good luck with everything. When your home is finished it will all be worth it.

Building is expensive but so is buying. At least with building you get exactly what you want. I can't wait to have a house. Good luck with everything and don't stress too much!

Hey, you guys. If you haven't already, click on the pictures, and you can see a larger version of the house plans. We have already made some changes to the plans, but you get the basic idea. We added a half bath in the basement. That equals 4 and 2 half baths! The kids will still share rooms. We are planning to put them all downstairs.
