Remember When. . . ?

I have been inspired to add some other memories of growing up Glover in Blanding. This is not a comprehensive list; feel free to add or edit any or all of the comments.

  • Star Wars figures were buried in the backyard and turned up in the front yard when we moved soil for the landscaping.
  • There was a big hole dug in the backyard for a fort. It filled up with water that "accidently" overflowed from the ditch. It became the Glover swimming hole for a few days.
  • We laid on the front lawn one August night and watched the Perseid Meteor Shower.
  • Mother woke everyone up at 4:00 AM to see Halley's Comet in the Southeast sky.
  • You hiked up the knoll often.
  • There were fossils and potsherds everywhere.
  • Glover boys went fishing in Meyer's pond.
  • The family went on vacations to Disneyland, DC, South Dakota and Montana.
  • The backyard garden was available for snacks (sugar snap peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, raspberries, etc.).
  • Somebody lost her blankie in the raspberry patch -- for months!
  • Beau and Bunny were our favorite pets.
  • There were 2 Audis for Worthy and an LTD for Nan.
  • Jumping stake center hills in a full size van was the thrill of the week.
  • Spinning brodies in the Geo took over the thrills.
  • Guymon's hay truck sped down the street so fast that it was scary ( and life threatening for Wheeler's dog).
  • There were prairie dogs, coyotes, eagles, and deer to watch from almost any direction.
  • Toads were plentiful and noisy.
  • The birth of horses in the neighbor's back yard was an enlightening experience.
  • Playing hide 'n seek in the alfalfa fields was fun.
  • There were burn barrels in the back yard.
  • Field fires were started by the burn barrels.
  • Wheeler's horses often got loose and ate our garden.
  • Worthy Jr. was baptized in the South Chapel. That room is now the 8th Ward Bishop's office.
  • The night games with neighbors required wearing as much black clothing as possible.
  • Playing in the cedar trees west of our house was so much fun until Flannery's built their house and it was no longer an option.
  • Playing in the apricot tree in the backyard was just as much fun.
  • We played games outside for Home Evening, like, "I Had a Little Doggie, and He Won't Bite You . . ."
  • Cottonwood -- water and rocks to slide down, and bugs to eat us alive!
  • Sometimes we drove up the mountain in the summer to escape the heat.
  • Dad led us in silly songs while we rode along.
  • Dad took the boys on Father and Sons' Outings as often as he could. ("Dad, remember when we went on the Father and Sons" Campout, and you was the father, and I was the son?")
  • The boys shared a bedroom, and the girls shared a bedroom. (" I didn't make any of the mess; I shouldn't have to clean any of it up!"
  • There was a fire engine bunk bed.
  • We went tubing in the winter, sometimes down the face of the little reservoir behind Guymon's house, and sometimes on SJ Hill.)
  • There was a "Devil's Heartbeat."
  • Tim was struck by lightning. (He'll never turn off sprinklers in the rain again.)
  • We had Family Home Evening feuds.
  • Band trips were the highlight of the school year.
  • The girls always got a new homemade formal dress for band concerts.
  • You were such cute little folk dancers in grade school.
  • Some teenagers woke Mother up to tell her they had made it home by curfew and then snuck out again.
  • Mother was PTA president and gave away lots of Free Books to the elementary school.
  • There were swimming lessons at the city pool which didn't really teach anything.
  • The Glover children learned to swim in motel swimming pools.
  • Dr. Lobotomy was entertaining and embarrassing.
  • Navajo speaking Santa landed in a helicopter on the Albert R. Lyman Elemetary School playground. While the other children screamed, "Santa, Santa," the Glover children screamed, "Daddy, Daddy."
  • We had Group Home Boys.
  • The Blanding Fourth of July Parade was mostly tractors and 4-wheelers.
  • School clothes shopping was the highlight or lowlight of the summer, depending on your perspective.
  • One Glover boy didn't find the exact clothes he wanted, so he bought a pattern and cloth and made it himself.
  • We had job charts, with duties changing weekly.
  • We had Family Home Evening charts, with everyone's picture in the middle of a flower.
  • We had laundry tubs with individual names on them.
  • We sang together as a family, "We Will Live in the Manner of Happiness."
  • We had a chicken coop which gave us fresh eggs and attracted skunks.
  • Dan Wheeler shot a skunk in our chicken coop one night, and we couldn't gather eggs for weeks.
  • You had to choose your own punishment when you were naughty.
  • The Glover children learned selective Navajo words from Dad.
  • We had Miss Piggy in the Pigpen.
  • Wheelers had goats. Phew!
  • There were sleepwalkers in the house. (You know who you are!)
  • Everyone loved early morning prayer and scripture study.
  • The road we can see out our back window is called "Round the World."
  • There once was a treehouse in the poplar tree in the backyard.
  • Glover children thought the move to the house on Flour Mill Road was too far away from civilization.
  • There was a Sunday when the Glover males sat on one side of the chapel, and the Glover females sat on the other side. Oh, the small town rumors that were started just because the parents wanted to separate the disagreements for once.
  • All the Glover children worked at Parley Redd's/Clark's Market for a part-time job in the summer.
  • All the Glover children went to Provo with Mother when she worked on her master's degree.
  • When Mother went on business trips, she let each child take a turn traveling with her.
  • Dad did Priesthood interviews with each child.
  • Dad took each child out on a "date."
  • We blessed our new home when we moved it, so the Spirit could reside there.
  • Life was more idyllic and peaceful at one point in time; I just have a hard time remembering that anymore.

PLEASE, add your own memories and comments. We Love You All!

I can remember most of that stuff as if it were yesterday. I think you have to add the bunnies and the ducks to the list of animals that we had. I remeber when one of the ducks tried to attack Drew. Then we ate it!

When one of the ducks TRIED to attack me? As if it happened just once? I lived in fear of my life from that duck for MONTHS. That was probably the tastiest duck i ever ate.

I sometimes think how cool it is that my kids get to grow up with all these neat experiences that I'm giving them (we went to the beach near Alicante Spain this week - now THAT'S cool) BUT, then I read Mom's list and I remember how cool it was to grow up in Blanding.

Remember when all the fruit trees started dying because (a) the kids never watered them like we were supposed to, and (b) they were trying to grow around layers of bailing twine which we had used to hang up our blanket hammocks?

What a great list, so many memories. Remember the time we went to tithing settlement and didn't realize we had forgotten Tim until we were sitting in the Bishop's office? And remember when Worthy tried to make his own Michael Jackson white glittery glove?

Remember when we were in Annie? And remember that Chrislynn and Nan had a "Secret Spot" next to the ditch across from where Flanneries are now? Remember sleeping outside and watching the stars and listening to the buzz of the electric transformer? Remember the weekly arguments with the Wheeler kids? I am really enjoying living with Mom and Dad and watching my Children have similar experiences to mine as a child.
